Become familiar with the way lava interacts with nature and induces life. From the destruction at Kalapana, to the mixture of lava remnants and the seeds of a new forest you will see the way a volcano affects the landscape and changes lives.

We travel through Bayan drive and Liliuokalani gardens, an Japanese Edo period style garden with ocean vistas and tropical touches. On the way to iconic Rainbow falls our drivers will illustrate and inform the history of Hilo town from plantations to tsunamis. 

 Then we take you to a local beach covered by black sand which are remnants of lava rocks constantly ground by incoming waves. It is not uncommon to see green sea turtles and if you're lucky Hawaiian Monk Seals sun bathing on the beach. The next stop is a guided walk through Lava tree park, which was formed by lava flowing onto trees and instantly burning the trees while the lava cools to form a natural pillars of lava rock where the trees once stood. After seeing the "lava trees" we then head over to the thermal ponds of Kapoho naturally warmed by the activity of the volcano. Following are stop at the Kapoho thermal pond we head to the ruins of what used to be Kalapan village now engulfed by lava. The road partially consumed by lava is an eery reminder that flows of volcanic rock can rarely be stopped. A small hike will then take you to see the beautiful untouched black sand beach of Kalapana, a perfect summary of your journey and inside look of the majesty of Hawaii's active volcano.
